छठी कक्षा के छात्र थे और स्कूल फुटबॉल टीम के गोलकीपर। क्रिकेट टीम के विकेटकीपर का परिवार बेटे की पढ़ाई को लेकर सीरियस था। उधर उसका पत्ता कटा और इधर धोनी की बतौर विकेटकीपर क्रिकेट टीम में एंट्री हो गई। इसी उम्र से धोनी खेल को लेकर बहुत जुनूनी थे। बाकी दुनिया पढ़ाई के बाद बचे समय में क्रिकेट खेला करती थी, धोनी क्रिकेट से बचे समय में थोड़ी-बहुत पढ़ाई कर लेते थे। मेहनत रंग लाई और छोटी सी उम्र में बड़ा नाम बन गया। धोनी को क्रिकेट खेलते देखने के लिए कई किलोमीटर दूर से लोग फील्ड पर पहुंच जाते थे।

धोनी रेलवे के काम में सबसे बेहतरीन थे लेकिन फिर भी उनके सीनियर माही से जलते थे। यह काम भी करता है और क्रिकेट भी खेल लेता है, कैसे? जानबूझकर धोनी को हद से ज्यादा काम दिया जाता था और उनका आत्मविश्वास तोड़ने की भरसक कोशिश की जाती थी। इन सब चक्करों में पड़ कर धोनी की जिंदगी थम गई थी। खैर, माही लौट आए और खुद को क्रिकेट में झोंक दिया।
